It all depends on the conditions of the reefs. If you want limu kohu a pungent algae that grows in water that has a current often growing on cliffsides where waves break and has a constant flow of water. If you pick any algae do not pull the roots. Gently pinch it between your fingernails. If you pull it, it will not grow back. This is very important.
If you are looking for the ogo which is also used on Poke, You will have to look in reef areas during low tide. You need to know what it looks like. Sadly a lot of the algae you are looking for has been over gathered and inundated by pollution on O`ahu and some areas on outer islands. Ogo is propogated by root and spores. I'm pretty sure it is illegal to pick it when it has spores.
