Hawaiian Uses
Myripristis spp. - Soldierfish - `Ü`ü
Proverbs and Sayings: "Ua loa`a ka i`a `o ka `ü`ü"
which means "the soldierfish have just been caught". This is said of someone who
has a reason to sigh or grieve. This is a play on the word `ü, which means to
sigh.
Interesting Stuff: The `ü`ü has a red coloration and a
striped pattern. The red color, which represented royalty, was very important to
Hawaiians. Also, the `ü`ü was believed to be an `aumakua or family god of
the Hawaiians.
